The 2017 challenge to be pictured outside a national landmark was fulfilled (several times over) during a short visit to London during April.
The landmark that officially ticked off the task was Buckingham Palace, the imposing and impressive structure that has been at the centre of so many memorable moments in this country’s history – although it could just as easily have been Big Ben, Nelson’s Column, Westminster Abbey, Kensington Palace etc.
Kensington Palace hosted an exhibition of dresses worn by Diana, Princess of Wales during the year that marked the 20th anniversary of her passing. Elaine was particularly keen to see not only the display, but also the newly opened (and beautiful) White Garden that had been created in Diana’s memory.
We also had the chance to spend an evening with my elder daughter Leigh-Ann, who had lived and worked in the capital for a good few years. After a couple of drinks, we went for a meal to an Italian restaurant and, after perusing the menu, I picked the spicy pizza.
The waitress came to take our order, and to advise that pizzas were off the menu.
You can imagine my disappointment – and the waitress kindly said she would pop into the kitchen, have a quick chat with the chef, and see what she could do. A few minutes later, she bounded back to our table with a huge grin on her face, offered her hand for me to ‘high five’ and excitedly announced that they could accommodate one more pizza. What would I like to order …?
‘I’ll have the risotto.’
Well, I thought it was funny.
