Double celebrations in the Kirby family today... actually every 24th June... as two people who mean such a lot to me share their birthdays.
Here is Chris... officially my step-son, but the "step" bit has long since become irrelevant. This picture will give you a clue as to what he does for a living...
He's a NatWest bank clerk...
I'm proud of all he's achieved... like I am with all my kids... but when Chris managed to drink two full pints of lager and find his way home without being arrested last month, well I defy any parent not to get just a little emotional...
Enjoy your day Chris... I'll be on the phone later!
Birthday no.2 (strictly speaking it should be no.1 as she was born first) is that of my wife Elaine. It wouldn't be fair to give away how old she is... mostly because I'm the same age... but she's received a birthday card from Saga saying "not long now..." and when-ever we see one of those adverts with Michael Parkinson selling life cover for a certain age group, we're now thinking... ooohh... interesting... and you get a free sat nav....
On a more serious note, whatever I have bought Elaine (and she's not opened her pressies yet... actually she hasn't even woken up yet...), I still can't give her the one thing she wants so much... to hear from her daughter.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Elaine has shown so much dignity and courage these past six years or so... keeping quiet when so much crap has been thrown around. It's reached the point where she doesn't know if Lucy will even remember that today is the birthday of the woman who gave her life... even if she does remember, there'll be no card... no text... no call...
But it's another year gone... another year that you can't get back. Maybe one day things will change... maybe they never will, but I just want to say to my darling wife: "I love you Elaine... you're brilliant and you deserve only good things in your life. Whatever the future holds, I will always be by your side. Happy birthday darling xxxxx"
All my own work... almost.
