Not a bad week on the television front with last night’s opening episode of The Paradise and a new ITV offering entitled Homefront. It’s not so much the subject matter, although I really enjoyed the 1870 department store setting of The Paradise and I’m sure the drama about military wives and girlfriends will be equally good... actually it’s more about the return of two of my favourite actresses.
Nicola Stephenson will possibly best remembered for sharing an on-screen kiss with Anna Friel in Brookside many many moons ago. In amongst her many subsequent credits was a spell in Holby City as Julie Fitzjohn, but Nicola also appeared in a brilliant, but not particularly well-known Dave Spikey comedy entitled Dead Man Weds. In the series (which starred Johnny Vegas), Nicola played the part of Donna Havercroft... although she was always called “Hovercraft”.
The Paradise features the second most fanciable Elaine in the world... Elaine Cassidy. Irish-born Elaine played Abby Mills in the gripping mystery thriller Harper’s Island back in 2009 (if you missed the series, it’s well worth watching...). Three years and one child later (she is married to former Eastenders’ actor Stephen Lord), Elaine is now the demure, wealthy, desirable and eligible Katherine Glendenning in the BBC’s newest costume drama.
The series looks like it’s going to be excellent... but given the presence of such a fine actress (did I say she was gorgeous too?!), I have to admit that I’d watch it even if it was rubbish...
All my own work... almost.
