Caroline John was the reason why I wrote Desperately Seeking Susan Foreman... so it is with great sadness that I have learned today of her passing (on 5thJune, aged 72).
Caroline played Dr Elizabeth “Liz” Shaw opposite Jon Pertwee’s Doctor Who in 1970. She appeared in the four stories that comprised Season 7, the first episodes transmitted in colour and it was an autographed photo of Caroline (acquired from eBay) that was the inspiration behind my first officially published book.
I tracked down Caroline early in 2011 – she signed the pictures I had sent and wrote to ask for a copy of one of them, as she hadn’t seen it before. I posted off the photo – and a copy of the book – and received a lovely letter in reply.
As well as being a fine actress, I had heard that Caroline was a lovely person and always happy to hear from “fans” who had enjoyed her brief time in Doctor Who. My own experience simply confirmed this to be the case and I will be watching one of her stories tonight to remember her and the kindness she showed to someone she didn’t even know...
In dedicating this blog to her memory, I’m posting Caroline’s letter from 1st March 2011 along with the picture she liked so much. Rest in Peace xx
All my own work... almost.
