From the photographic archives, I have unearthed this picture from 2005 (I think... or it could be 2006), which shows five lovely young ladies, one of whom is my daughter... the other four aren’t!!!
The picture was taken in the bar at Gateshead International Stadium, home of Gateshead Thunder, the north east’s only professional rugby league side and the four that aren’t my daughter were regulars at home and away games, cheering on their team... and of course their “favourite” respective player.
From left-to-right we have Karen, Becca (she’s my daughter... and given how she looks now will probably cringe when she sees this), Rachael, Keris and Helen.
Karen and Rachael are now married to those same players... not the same player, that would be illegal... and both have young families. Keris is also married and expecting her first baby... her husband is called Aaron Lewis... bizarrely, this was also the name of a Thunder player around that time, but this is a different Aaron altogether.
Today is actually Keris’ birthday, so this blog is by way of a gift!!!
For the record, Becca isn’t married yet and hasn’t made me a grandfather... tick, tick, tick goes the body clock!! (only joking darling x).
These were good times to be a Gateshead Thunder supporter and I’ve got some fond memories, mostly of the away trips along the M62 corridor and beyond to watch the lads in action, but also of the odd hour or two spent at the
Schooner down on the banks of the Tyne. My favourite individual game was probably the 57-32 win at Swinton (which I’ve got on DVD), but one of the better days was a trip to Blackpool (more specifically Fylde RUFC) when I drove Becca and three of the“WAGS” (a term of endearment...) over to the Lancastrian coast.
It’s a really nice feeling strolling into a pub with a group of attractive young women, especially when customers look up, glance at me, then at the girls and wonder “how does he do it..?” Obviously, paternal instincts take over when someone stares at your daughter... “whoa mate... she’s my daughter and she’s only (insert inappropriate age...)...”
Time moves inexorably on though and I think only Karen lives in the north east now... but this evening I will raise a glass to the “good old days” and to the birthday girl. Many happy returns Keris x
All my own work... almost.
