Grangetown take on Telstars in netball’s Premier League Division 2 at Middlesbrough Sports Village tomorrow (12:30 start), with both teams have lost their opening two fixtures.
Newcomers Ryland have recorded victories at both clubs, with Kent-based Telstars’ other game ending in a narrow but very creditable defeat away to Clan, who were one of last season’s stronger sides.
Grangetown lost 32-38 at Worcester Reds one week ago, and this is how captain Vicky Rees reflected on that game: “We felt confident going into last Sunday’s match having spent a lot of time at training going over some attack and defensive unit work and strategies. We had a plan and we were going to stick to it.
“On paper, the match down at Reds was never going to be easy though; the team had spent last season in Prem 1, playing against the best clubs in the country.
“It turned out to be closely fought match and it was really only in the third quarter when we let our concentration slip, and lost enough goals to make it too hard a task to get back into the game.
“I was really proud of the way we battled right to the end; we never gave up. And I was also pleased how we were able to integrate the structures we had learnt at training on Monday into the match so successfully.
“Overall, it was disappointing to lose by six goals when, at times, we’d looked like the better team; but it’s fair to say the Reds were more consistent and confident in their play, never forcing the pass.
“We know what we need to do, and we have worked hard again in training this week to rectify our mistakes. We are playing like a squad, and we are looking forward to tomorrow’s match against Telstars.”
