Just a short one today... England’s T20 cricket side face Pakistan today in the decider in the three-match series and much attention is likely to be focussed on the young Yorkshireman Jonny Bairstow, whose unbeaten 60 off just 46 balls helped England to win Saturday’s encounter.
Bairstow is a former pupil of my old school, St Peter’s in York and as my father David enters his final year coaching the school 1st XI (and he’s been running the cricket since the 1960s...), he will admit that Jonny is the finest young player to have past through the St Peter’s ranks...
I did ask Dad where I was in the list (I took a few wickets between 1979-82), but he said he’d only done the top 1,000....
I did bowl at Jonny in the nets whilst he was still at school, even then he had an assurance and maturity that belied his years; his knock at the weekend showed to a much wider audience the array of shots he possesses; he is an oustanding fielder... potentially a very good wicker-keeper and he can throw down a few offies too... all in all, I’m actually starting to dislike the lad!!
Many an expert is predicting that we are watching a future test player in the making... I know one retired schoolmaster and former Leicestershire county captain who will be a very proud man when that day comes...
All my own work... almost.
